In 1901, the first Harley-Davidson got its start on paper when William Harley drew plans for an 116cc engine for use in a pedal-bike frame. Harley and his friend Arthur Davidson spent two years building their HOG but after an initial test run discovered their bike's inability to climb hills without pedal assistance.

Back to work, Harley and Davidson began construction on what is considered the actual first Harley-Davidson motorcycle using a bigger 405cc engine. The bigger engine and accompanying loop-frame design removed the bike from the motorized-bicycle category into what eventually became known as motorcycles. This Harley debuted in September 1904 in a motorcycle race and placed fourth.

Today, Harley-Davidson motorcycle stands as an American icon and its logo, the "Bar & Shield" is one of the most recognized in the world. And about those HOGS - that term originated back in the 1920s when a Harley team used a hog as their mascot and paraded the animal on their Harley-Davidson motorcycle whenever they won a race.
