Unfortunately we do not have the specifications for the outer diameter of the carburetor intake flange for the 1996 Polaris Sportsman 500. You will need to be able to measure it to know which size filter is correct for this application.

What do the size opptions mean?
I was wondering what the numbers on the size options mean? if the first number was the size of the hole or the diameter I want to run one off the carburetor where the air box hooks up to is this possible

These are designed to mount directly to the carburetor where the air boot originally would have hooked up. You will need to measure the outer diameter of the inlet side of the carburetor where the airboot attached and order the corresponding filter to that measurement. The first number measurement shown for sizing will be the inner diameter of the filter where it will mount to the carb. The second measurement will be the overall length of the filter.
