So great I bought 2

I purchased a bell race star at the end of track season 2017. I loved it. It is as quiet as any touring helmet I’ve worn, has a snug but comfortable fit while on the track and looking through the panovision shield was the first time I realized not all shields are created equal. I absolutely love the shields that come with the bell pro and race star helmets.

In the beginning of 2018 I had a high side accident and came down on my head and shoulder and my head slid across the tarmac. My bell racestar helmet did its job and I walked away from the accident without even a headache. And the helmet suffered what appears to be only cosmetic damage (it’s been retired nevertheless)

My intentions were to replace that helmet with another race star, but when I found such a great deal on the ProStar I decided to upgrade. The prostar is everything I love about the race. It’s lighter, but so far it doesn’t seem to have any recognizable benefits over the race. The carbon weave does look nicer, so I guess on aesthetics I would rank the pro slightly higher than the race

The only (and I mean only) negative I have is probably specific to my head/ face. this will differ from person to person and be based on the shape of your head. While an extra large is just a tad too lose for my taste and for going 180mph at the track I also find the size large is a bit snugg on my cheeks and after hours of street riding I can tell it’s putting some pressure on one particular part of my head. The perfect comfort would probably be a size between and L and XL. but I plan to experiment with other cheek pads. The fit is not off enough to bother me or cause a headache. Actually I think the fit is very appropriate for its intended use, which is most certainly on the track in a tucked or semi tucked position and actually I would not consider this a fit issue, maybe more of a “comfort” issue. That said, I notice this mainly on the street riding a sport naked. I don’t recall ever feeling uncomfortable in this helmet while on My R1 on the track. By contrast every other helmet I’ve tried on the track has either been comfortable but too loose. Or fit properly but had significant comfort issues.

Despite being designed for a rider in a tucked position, I have found that it’s very usable on the street. Comfort suffers a little, but I’d give it 4 stars for noise and a full 5 stars for visibility when compared to any and every other helmet I’ve worn. Because of its light weight my neck never gets tired. Even after 4-5 hours of riding.

One very impressive feature of this helmet is how they have been able to ventilate it without adding noise or putting strain on the neck. I think this has a lot to do with the single inlet above the brow and it’s exhaust port on the back. This helmet is certainly very cool as I find myself sweating much less In this helmet than others I’ve worn.

I consider this helmet perfect in terms of ease of use. The face shield is easily changed and all of the components feel very sturdy. The padding on the inside of the helmet is secured magnetically. So they can be easily removed to wash and put back in in a matter of seconds. I really like this feature. Cleaning the pads was always something I had avoiding doing with other helmets because of the pain it is to reinstall them.

I’ve compared this helmet to an x-14, pista, shark race carbon, and an Arai that I don’t recall the model name. All of them were more expensive, with the shark being the only exception, and if I could have any of those helmets as a gift I’d take the Pro or even the Race Star by Bell.
