A: The "M" spec would be a front tire, The "O" spec would be a rear tire. The rear tire is made of a bi-compound mixture. The rubber compound in the central section of the tread area, depending on the tire size, is on average 45 mm wide, with a 70% silica content specifically designed for higher mileage and stability at high speeds. The tire shoulders comprise of approximately 88 mm on each side of the profile and have a 100% silica compound, which increases dramatically the chemical grip in the wet and reduces sliding under all conditions. The front tire also consists of a 100% silica compound.

Q: Z8 Metzler M & O spec. Rear 180/55-ZR17?

I have no idea which spec M or O is right for my 2012 R1200RT BMW. What does the M & O designation mean in terms of tire selection-performance and how do I know I have the right tire for my bike?

A: Here is what Metzeler has to say regarding the M and O spec designations on their tires. Keep in mind, only the O spec tire is imported into the USA and is what we sell and will work fine on your 2012 R1200RT.

"To answer your question in 2012 we updated many sizes in the Roadtec Z8 Interact range. The tires that received changes are the front Roadtec 120/70ZR17 TL (58W) M Spec. This new front tire (Ip code 2283600) was updated with a new compound and carcass for more performance, wet grip, and mileage. To help distinguish the previous version from the new we have added an M to the sidewall, and this M can be found in a circle that is molded on the sidewall next to the name of the tire. In regards to rear tires that received changes we find that we added a new rear 180/55ZR17 in a O spec. Then we have done the same with the 190/50ZR17 and the 190/55ZR17. We must point out that only the O spec rear tires are being imported to the US while the Canadian market imported both specs. Then all of these 5 new rear tires feature a multi compound design for more performance, wet grip, and mileage. Finally the O spec designates a rear tire that features a 2 ply carcass that helps improve stability and mileage especially when used on loaded down heavy sport touring bikes which are popular in this market. And also in this rear tire case we add an M or O to the sidewall to help distinguish the new Z8 Interact from the previous version."
