This stuff is realy loosly packed in the packaging and when you wrap your exhaust ,even a small 2 stroke silencer, there doest seem to be enough.

Great Value
FMF knows their stuff when it comes to 2 strokes, so no worries.

Just fine
Exactly what it's supposed to be--silencer packing. Had a little left over on a stock KX 250 pipe, so it'd probably fit most silencers.

Whens a good time to change your packing?
I recently took my fmf apart and noticed that my packing was just soaked in oil, is that a good sign or a bad sign? and is there supposed to be any oil in that at all? and also is that a sign that its time to repack?? HELP PLEASE!
Expert MotoSport Staff
Over 3 years ago Location: Portland, OR
Oil in the exhaust packing is normal for a 2stroke. Leaving the oil soaked packing in the exhaust is not good. That's a good sign you'll need to repack and another indication is noticing the exhaust is getting louder.

Read this in a dirt bike magazine: oil soaked packing can be a sign of a couple of things good or bad - rich mixture, low RPM riding and/or blown piston rings. Oil is bound to happen but how often and how much is the question. Oil Soaked packing = repacking time. Mine dripped oil just sitting on a stand cold - it was that bad.

I would pick up two to be on the safe side. It doesn't hurt to have some extra packing lying around.

Would it matter if i used fmf packing along with moose packing?
MotoSport Staff Expert
I'm not sure what the moose packing looks like, but I wouldn't think that would be an issue. Its going to get oiled up anyways.

Yes, this will work in a stock silencer.

If you dont repack, will effect the engine?

It wont hurt your engine but it wont run the way it should. Repack it, you can tell a difference in power.

I had bought the moose silencer packing sheet (from local shop) and it didn't seem close to as much as i had pulled out, thats why i ask.

How do you change the silencer packing?
I have a 1979 RM80c and, its really loud!!!!! its a 2 stroke. Its so loud, my dad wont let me start it up because we live in the city. so how would you change it? would you take the end of the muffler off and take the inside out somehow or what? inside, the muffler, there is a round thing with a bunch of circle holes in it all over, what is that? please help..... any information or websites is appreciated. Thanks,

I would purchase the service manual for the bike. this book will give you every bit of information about the bike. You can try FMF website to see if they have any tutorials on how to do this. It's not difficult. www.fmfracing.com

no i wouldnt take anything out ! ! !if anything you will just make it louder !! ! you could try getting a diffrent exhaust pipe ! ! !and those holes are to filter the air going threw that pipe threw your packing
Over 4 years ago
What I did was typed in how to re-pack an exuast pipe on google and I found a tutorial.

How Often should you change this ?
MotoSport Staff Expert
There is no time table to give you regarding how often you need to change the packing. Just like FMF states, use your ears and listen to the bike. If it becomes louder, than that's the sign to repack. or if you notice excess oil dripping out, that's a good sign. Or even if you're unsure, repack it. It's cheap and will make the bike run better.
