The unwound Supercross track idea also known as the Red Bull Straight Rhythm, the latest creation to stave off Silly Season blues, returns for a third year on Saturday at the Fairplex in Pomona, CA.

Cornering be damned! This track features nothing of the kind. Instead it is one, long, straight-forward 2,500 foot Supercross style track with whoops and jumps and everything else you expect to see inside a stadium from January through May but without the turns.

It's a new design from the previous two year's layout that brings 74 jumps, 236 feet of whoops, a sand trap and three speed checks. Riders begin from an elevated platform and this year must first deal with a rhythm section. Thanks to the later starting time fans get to enjoy racing under the lights and hopefully beat the heat though forecast for Saturday still hits 90. Better than last year's near 100 degree scorcher!

The 2016 edition keeps the two competing classes: 16 riders in the Open class which allows any dirt bike with an engine size bigger than 250; and 10 riders in the Lites class (competing for eight spots in the main event) which is for the 250 bikes including an electric dirt bike piloted by Josh Hill. The Straight Rhythm pits rider vs. rider in a one-on-one, best of three racing format.

James Stewart, the two-time defending Champion, is not returning and neither is last year's runner-up contestant, Ken Roczen. Ryan Dungey, who was one race win away from the final last year, is back as is his Red Bull KTM teammate Marvin Musquin, and his new teammate Trey Canard making his Straight Rhythm debut and gives fans their first glimpse of him atop a KTM after switching brands this off-season, leaving Honda after 10 years. Malcolm Stewart, the defending Lites Champion, is not defending his title, either.

Other riders in the Open class include: Josh Hansen, Jeff Alessi, Nico Izzi, Austin Politelli, Darryn Durham, Deven Raper, Tevin Tapia, Kyle Chisholm, Nick Schmidt, Vince Friese, Axell Hodges, Dustin Pipes, and Gregg Duff.

And the Lites riders: 2015 runner-up Shane McElrath, Jordon Smith, Mitchell Oldenberg, Dakota Alix, Kerim Fitz-Gerald, Josh Hill, Colton Aeck, Ben LaMay, Jon Jon Ames and Dare DeMartile. An exhibition race between Supercross personas Ronnie Mac and Trevor Piranha is also scheduled.

Gates open at 1 p.m. (PST) with qualifying at 2 p.m. (PST) and the main event at 5:45 p.m. (PST) on Saturday at the Fairplex, 1101 W. McKinley Ave. in Pomona, CA. Buy tickets online or at the gate. Watch live on Red Bull TV.
