What It Is

Lockstraps are exactly what their name implies: locking tie downs to help deter would-be bike thieves. Sold as a single tie down, a Lockstrap just might help your prized possession stay where it's supposed to, thanks to its locking carabineers and steel security cable that runs through the nylon webbing.

Hits

-Easy to customize lock combination. -Locks on both ends also discourage tie down theft (or "borrowing"). -Steel cable inside nylon strap is tougher to cut through than a cable alone. -The site of the combination-lock carabiners alone may be enough to deter thieves. -Locking carabiners are easy to operate. -Soft-tie design prevents scratches on handlebars.

Misses

-Soft-tie design is more cumbersome to use than traditional hooks (albeit required for this application). -Tightening and loosening action not as smooth as traditional tie downs. -Although the combination side is designated with a small arrow, it is possible to confuse the sides and spend several minutes resetting the combination in frustration.

The Verdict

Though there is virtually nothing that will stop a determined and well-prepared thief, Lockstraps are a nice piece of added security to help deter grab-and-dash thieves. The added peace of mind that a Lockstrap can provide is well worth the 40 bucks.
