Product Description

Important note: This piston is for a stock sized bore. Please measure your cylinder to check clearance before ordering.

As the OE supplier of two-stroke pistons to KTM, Vertex pistons have an outstanding reputation for quality and performance. Each gravity-cast piston is created with only premium aluminum alloys utilizing an 12 - 21% silicon content.

The silicon content in Vertex pistons is crucial to the quality of the piston. Silicon is critical in decreasing thermal expansion which, when an engine reaches normal operating temperatures, can change the geometry of the piston. Controlling this expansion means that a Vertex piston can be run at tighter tolerances for more power, less noise and maintain a longer lifespan for the piston. Additionally, the silicon content decreases wear on the piston skirt which also aids in the longevity of the piston.

In addition to the silicon, each Vertex piston utilizes a unique Molybdenum Disulphide (MOS2) coating which aids in the break-in process and reduces overall wear.

  • Bore diameter: 46.95 mm (Standard).
  • With the purchase of a premium quality piston, every Vertex piston kit contains a complete set of nitride-coated or chrome-plated piston rings, a fully case-hardened wrist pin and circlips - all at a competitive price.

Great Product

I noticed a huge power gain when I installed this piston the only issue I have with it is the C clips. They are very hard to install.

Does make a difference

We've been racing bikes for years. We've always used a different brand of piston without any problems. This time we tried the Vertex and we can tell you without a doubt our motor is pulling a lot harder On Top! Vertex from now on for sure.

Piston power house

First time using Vertex piston on one of my rebuilds. Top end feels solid with great compression. Kit came with everything I needed. Break in period is going smooth. I definitely would recommend this piston and when the time comes I will purchase Vertex piston again.

KTM's - careful of piston type!

This ended up being a type 1(type A) piston, which is the stock piston from the factory and is slightly smaller in diamater than a type 2(type B) piston. All replacement pistons should be type 2, since the larger piston will fit in a broken-in cylinder better, unless you've just had your piston replated. It didn't damage anything, but I ended up having poor compression because of the slack fit of the smaller piston. Replaced it with an OEM type 2 and noticed a difference immediatey.

Stock Bore "B"?
My cylinder is stamped with a "B" on my 2011 YZ250. This is a stock bore, correct? The Vertex 2-Stroke Piston- Stock Bore is the correct size?

Yes, since this is a forged piston instead of a cast piston like your OEM piston was it does not have the "A, B, C" designation. It will work perfectly fine with the "B" cylinder on your YZ250 as forged pistons actual form to fit the shape/size of the cylinder when they are run through a heat cycle or break in period.

Does the kit come with all the gaskets needed?

No gaskets included with this kit. You'll need a top end gasket kit as well.

This is actually just the Piston, Rings, Wrist Pin and Circlips. It would not include the Gaskets. We do offer several Piston Kits that would include the gaskets (see product recommendations).

No you need to get gasket kit as well

2003 CR250 Piston fitment?
I have an 03 CR250 and I just installed the Vertex piston (Stock Bore) that I bought here a few months ago. After only a few hours of riding I pulled the top and noticed it has been rubbing against the cylinder in the front where the exhaust ports are. I have an A cylinder and noticed the piston has a B on the top. When I ordered it there was only one option when it came to piston size but I'm guessing this is the wrong size for my cylinder. Is there an option for an A piston from vertex?

I need to find the type 2 size piston due to the larger cylinder where can i find it?
MotoSport Staff
Over 8 months ago Location: Portland, OR, USA
Not sure what you mean by "type 2" piston. If you can call us with what the current bore size is of the cylinder we can get the corresponding piston for you. Stock would be 54mm on this model.

One side of my motor is good one side is bad can i use this piston for the bad side or do i need both?
MotoSport Staff
1 year 1 month ago Location: Portland, OR, USA
I suggest doing both top ends at the same time to start off fresh. Replacing one piston and not the other will cost you more time and money in the long run.
Over 9 months ago Location: camden on gauley WV
It would be better to do both sides so that it would be a fresh rebuild and it would save you time and money. You might replace one side and then a few days or something the other side will go bad.
