Notes on Manufacturer Chain Type:

  • TG-ring - Sunstar proprietary X-ring design. TripleGuard sealed ring technology where there are 3 sealing lips and lubrication pools on each side of the ring to maintain top performance in high heat, extreme conditions; the TripleGuard ring type is the best for lubrication and protection.

Note for installing X-ring chains: As X-ring chains are wider than standard roller chains, when fitting an X-ring chain to a motorcycle that was fitted with a non O-ring chain as original equipment, it is essential to check that there is proper clearance of the engine cases near the countershaft sprocket and any other places of close contact. Failure to do so could result in damage to the chain and motorcycle and could ultimately cause the chain to fail.

Note: Image is for reference ONLY, actual product will vary based on fitment and selection.

Some Helpful Tools: Try the Motion Pro Chain Breaker & Riveting Tool or BikeMaster's Heavy-Duty Chain Breaker & Rivet Tool to make removing your old chain and installing your new chain as easy and painless as possible.

D.I.D 520 DZ2 Chain:

The All New D.I.D 520DZ2 is the best value in a lightweight, high-performance chain designed for motocross racing.

  • Great value in a lightweight chain.
  • Designed for off-road riding and motocross.
  • The DZ2 has twice the lifespan of the previous DZ.
  • SDH pin treatment - hard chromium-carbide layer formed on pin surface for exceptional strength and wear resistance.
  • Flexible inner soft core absorbs shock.
  • For entry level motocross, trial riding at an affordable price.
  • Average tensile strength of 7,870 pounds.
  • Wear life index: 410.
  • Rated for up to a 450cc motocross bike.

D.I.D's exclusive SDH (Super DH) pin treatment is the secret behind the superior performance of the DZ Series chains. This high-tech pin treatment forms an extremely hard chromium carbide layer on the pin's surface while maintaining a soft inner core. SDH treated pins have extreme impact strength while maintaining outstanding shock absorption. This treatment creates a chain with anti-oxidation properties and superior wear resistance against invasion of hard foreign materials.

D.I.D 520 ERT2 Chain:

The D.I.D ERT2 chain is the most trusted chain in Supercross and motocross racing because of its reputation of meeting the high quality demands that are required when pushing the limits. It was designed with the intention of making a chain that is optimized for the purpose of racing. D.I.D beefed up the ERT2 chain by increasing the pin size by 3% to give the chain an average tensile strength of 8,100 pounds. Increasing the strength of the ERT2 chain did not come with a sacrifice of weight, in fact DID was able to shed 5% from the previous ERT chain.

  • Exclusively designed for motorcycle racing.
  • High-performance, lightweight and low friction chain.
  • 3% bigger pin diameter and 5% lighter than former ERT.
  • Provides the highest wear resistance, tensile strength and impact resistance.
  • Average tensile strength of 8,100 pounds.
  • Wear life index: 430.

D.I.D 520 ERV3 X-Ring Chain:

D.I.D is the number one motorcycle chain in the world. D.I.D chains are used by factory races teams from all manufacturers in race series everywhere.

The D.I.D ERV3 X-ring chain is the ultimate high-performance, lightweight, low-friction race chain available and is used extensively by many off-road race teams. The ERV3 X-ring chain utilizes D.I.D's patented X-ring technology which reduces friction by 50% over standard O-ring chains for minimized power loss. The pins on the ERV3 X-ring chain have been put through a patented heat-treatment process to produce a pin that is 1.5 times harder than conventional pins. The result is a chain that is significantly stronger and offers better wear resistance than many other chains on the market. D.I.D ERV3 X-ring chains feature a gold-plated finish that resists rust and adds a little style to your motorcycle or ATV.

  • Exclusively designed for motorcycle racing.
  • High performance, lightweight and low friction chain provides the winning edge in World Class competition.
  • Features gold color plates.
  • Average tensile strength of 8,650 pounds.
  • Wear life index: 3100.
  • For 250 - 750cc Rally, 750cc Superbike and 250 - 750cc Endurance applications.
  • Weight (per 100 links): 3.30 pounds.
  • Includes a rivet-style master link.

Half the Power Loss - Compared with Normal O-ring chains, D.I.D's patented X-Ring construction reduces friction by twisting between the side plates instead of being squashed. Normal O-rings and other makers' modified O-rings have squashed points that increase friction. The twisting action of the X-Ring disperses the pressure and minimizes power loss.

1.5 to 2 Times Longer Wear Resistance - Compared with Normal O-ring chains, the X-Ring's four contact points greatly increase its sealing performance. This keeps the dirt out and the lubrication in much better than any other O-ring. X-Rings have the greatest wear resistance of any other type of O-ring or non-O-ring chain.

  • Wear life index: 3500.
  • Ideal for bikes and ATV's up to 750cc.
  • Weight (per 100 links): 3.35 pounds.
  • Includes clip-style master link.

Couldnt be better

I've always ran Vortex Sprockets and D.I.D Chains. When I blew out my hub and replaced the rear wheel I figured I might as well replace the drive with a complete kit. If my blown hub didn't bend my old sprocket i would still be riding on it today since it is so durable and it looks rather flashy too. Upgraded from heavy duty chain to ERT2 Gold chain and looks fantastic and cant wait to see how it holds up in the desert. Bike looks factory now! (Well rear end at least...)

Best sprocket and Chain Combo!

Vortex sprockets are the premiere sprockets in the Moto industry. With its flashy style, and durability second to none, they are a fantastic buy. Personally, I like them better than renthal. The DID ERT2 Gold chain is also a fantastic chain, with great durability, and the Gold looks really cool.

The best Combo you can buy, with a great pricetag!

Here is a picture after my install on my 2011 KX 250F. So far has lasted better than any other combo.

Q: Sprocket bolts?

I read a reviewe saying I need to order new sprocket bolts and that stock don't work is this true?

A: Yes you should always replace all of the sprocket nuts and bolts, apply threadlocker, and cinch them down to the manufacturer's recommended torque spec with a torque wrench anytime the sprocket is removed or replaced. For the rear sprocket, be sure to tighten the bolts in a star pattern.
If the bolts are not replaced they can back out damaging your hub and other parts.
(this happened to me many years ago and since I have always replaced the nuts and bolts and have never had another problem)

A: The chains are sold in bulk length (120links) to fit a range of gearing options. The chain would need to be cut down to fit your bike and gearing that you choose. Links are easily removed with a chain breaker which pushes the pin out or by grinding the head of the pin off to remove links. Once you have installed the sprockets you would need to put the chain on and measure where it needs to be cut. Just remember you can not add links if its cut too short.

Q: Fitment and Sprocket Size Opinion?

I'm curious as to what the best size tooth front/rear sprocket combo would be for my 05 YZ250F. Would it be best to stay with stock size, or could I use a better combination? Also, will the chain fit correctly, or will I need to remove some links? Do you folks have any good chain link tools? Thanks!

A: The chains are sold in bulk lengths to allow for a variety of different bikes and gearing options. If you have stock gearing on your 2013 YZ85 the 120L chain will work for you. If you have gone up on your gearing you will probably need a longer (126L) chain. Unfortunately this Vortex Chain & Sprocket Kit is not offered for your 2013 YZ85.
