Notes on Manufacturer Chain Type:

  • Z-ring - Renthal proprietary and patented X-ring design.
  • TG-ring - Sunstar proprietary X-ring design. TripleGuard sealed ring technology where there are 3 sealing lips and lubrication pools on each side of the ring to maintain top performance in high heat, extreme conditions; the TripleGuard ring type is the best for lubrication and protection.

Note for installing X-ring chains: As X-ring chains are wider than standard roller chains, when fitting an X-ring chain to a motorcycle that was fitted with a non O-ring chain as original equipment, it is essential to check that there is proper clearance of the engine cases near the countershaft sprocket and any other places of close contact. Failure to do so could result in damage to the chain and motorcycle and could ultimately cause the chain to fail.

Note: Image is for reference ONLY, actual product will vary based on fitment and selection.

Some Helpful Tools: Try the Motion Pro Chain Breaker & Riveting Tool or BikeMaster's Heavy-Duty Chain Breaker & Rivet Tool to make removing your old chain and installing your new chain as easy and painless as possible.

D.I.D 520 ATV X-Ring Chain:

The D.I.D X-ring® is superior to other types of O-ring designs; it has half the power loss and 1.5 to 2 times the wear resistance of a normal O-ring chain. D.I.D's patented X-ring construction reduces friction by twisting between the side plates instead of being squashed. Normal O-rings and other makers' modified O-rings have squashed points that increase friction. The twisting action of the X-ring disperses the pressure and minimizes power loss. The X-ring's four contact points greatly increase its sealing performance. This keeps the dirt out and the lubrication in much better than any other O-ring. X-rings have the greatest wear resistance of any other type of O-ring or non-O-ring chain.

  • Uses a special steel alloy designed specifically to provide the extra strength required for quad racing.
  • Features the same low friction, long wearing X-ring technology as D.I.D's VX, ZVM-X, ZLV, and ERV chains.

Sunstar 520 XTG Tripleguard Sealed ATV & Offroad Chain:

An excellent choice for the most extreme off-road conditions encountered in ATV and/or off-road motorcycle racing, Sunstar's premier sealed Works level chain is the 520XTG (XTG = Xtreme Triple Guard). It features Sunstar's TripleGuard sealed ring technology meaning there are three sealing lips and lubrication pools per side of the ring versus a single sided lip that is typical of standard O-rings. This design effectively protects the critical areas of the chain from mud, sand, dirt and the harsh conditions encountered in off-road racing (hence the name Xtreme for extreme conditions) and the chain stays well lubricated for a long duration of use. The XTG is perfect for all ATV's and off-road motorcycles 750cc or less. All components are 100% heat treated and its tensile strength is rated at 8,460 pounds. It's offered in pre-cut lengths and uses a press fit, clip-type connecting link in the gold color option (gold outer plates / natural inners).

  • Top of the line ATV and off-road racing chain.
  • Features exclusive TG (TripleGuard) sealed-ring technology to guard the chain from sand or dirt entering and causing wear.
  • Built specifically for handling the most extreme conditions encountered in ATV and off-road motorcycle racing.
  • TG-ring design prevents the loss of lubricant and is deigned to perform in any extreme heat or other course conditions.
  • Available only in Gold (gold outer plates / natural inners) finish.
  • Average tensile strength of 8,500 pounds.
  • Maximum rated displacement (street / off-road): 400cc / 750cc.
  • Weight (per 100 links): 3.36 pounds.
  • Includes press fit clip-style master link.

Sunstar 520 MXR1 Works MX Racing Chain:

Sunstar's MXR1 Works MX / SX / Off-Road race chain (MXR = Motocross Xtreme Racing) is a premium quality, highly durable non-sealed chain specifically designed for Motocross, Supercross and/or off-road racing. Featuring Sunstar's oversized TripleStar treated ultra hard pins and 100% heat treated components, the MXR1 chain is constructed to handle the demands of the highest levels of racing. This is also one of the lightest MX chains on the market thanks to its superlight design - the 520MXR1 120 link version weighs less than 3.6 pounds, yet is super strong with an 8,970-pound tensile strength rating. Its combination of strength, durability and light weight make it the top choice for serious racers.

  • Deep gold side plates and gold inner plates.
  • Super strong and lightweight design for high performance / racing mini off-road and motocross machines.
  • Utilizes TST (TripleStar Treated) ultra-hard pins and 100% heat treated components for high strength and durability.
  • Seamless rollers and bushings help provide the added life and durability.
  • Average tensile strength of 9,000 pounds.
  • Maximum rated displacement (street / off-road): N/A / 500cc.
  • Weight (per 100 links): 2.99 pounds.
  • Includes clip-style master link.
  • Note: Non-sealed chains require more regular maintenance than sealed (O-ring, X-ring) versions and are mainly recommended for off-road use.

Good reliable product

The chain is standard roller chain and sprockets are steel. Not very pretty but very reliable. We run 2 sets of chains - after a ride chain is removed for an oil bath and replaced. These chains do stretch quite a lot so monitor your tension closely.

Sun Star Chain & Sproket Set

I called Moto sports to ask about their Chain & Sprockets combination set. I was originally going to order the aluminum set for more $$$! The customer service person told me, the steel sprocket will last longer. Not only did he answer my question, he saved me money. I like the fact, I can call a company and get new information. Because, lets face it; we all know it all, right? NOT, at least I don't. The prices are spot on, the quality is super. Plus, you have Brett Cue! One day, he will be a Legend! Among the motorcycle Gods of the Whip! I really enjoy the Youtube video's by the way! Keep up the great customer service! Matt

Great combo

gave 4 stars on style because it would be nice to have a different color on the back sprocket, other than that its a great combo and the sunstar sprockets have always done well with durability on any bike!

Great quality, I've used them in the past over the years and not been disappointed. This is the first time for this chain, just installed so will wait on a true durability assessment.

Sunstar Sprockets w/ Renthal R1 Gold

Great combo of chain and sprockets. The steel lasts a lot longer than the aluminum and the renthal gold chain is the perfect pick to hold up with everything else! And it obviously looks good.

Sunstar Chain & Steel Sprocket Combo

If you do not care about weight and want reliability, this is the best set up for a 450!! They can last me a full season with a O-Ring chain.

Steel combo

The chain stretched very little after first ride which was 60 miles of single track. Not typical of lower end chains.

Q: Best setup for trail riding?
2 months 26 days ago
I have a 2008 YZ250F that has stock size sprockets (13/49). What setup would be best for trail riding? Would just increasing the number of teeth on the rear give me a lot more bottom-end power?
MotoSportExpert
Expert MotoSport Staff

A: Going up on the rear sprocket and/or down on the front will give you more bottom end. I would try going down one tooth on the front and If you still need more bottom end go up one or two teeth on the back.

A: It depends on the type of riding you are doing and what you are looking for. I personally have been running the DID ERT chain for many years.

A: Chain life will really depend on multiple factors, maintenance (how clean and oiled you keep your chain), riding conditions, bike, ect. I personally run the DID ERT2 chain and get a lot of life out of it. Its also a very strong chain.

Q: I have a Honda TRX90, would having larger than stock sprockets increase speed over hard surfaces?

The sprockets and chain need replaced, the chain keeps derailing at low speeds.
MotoSportExpert

A: For more top end speed you would want to go down on the back and/or up on the front. For bottom end you would go up on the back sprocket and/or down on the front. Feel free to give us a call at 888-676-8853 and we would be happy to help you out with your order.

A: The 428 would be the correct size for the XR100, not the 420. 420 and 428 are not the same size. Feel free to give us a call at 888-676-8853 and we would be happy to help you out with your order.

A: Gearing would depend on what kind of riding you are doing and how the current gearing is working for you now. Stock gearing would be 14/51 and you may want to go up or down from there. Tire choice would also depend on the riding you are doing and the terrain (soft, medium, hard) that you are riding on. Feel free to give us a call at 888-676-8853 and we would be happy to help you out with your order.

Q: I got a 2002 Honda xr100. what size chain should I get?

MotoSportExpert
MotoSport Staff Expert
1 year 5 months ago
A: It would depend on what size sprockets you are running. If you are going larger than the stock 14/50 I would suggest going with the 130L. If you are going with stock or smaller gearing the 120L chain should do it.
